Internal Medicine – What to expect!
Welcome to Internal Medicine! Below is a description of what to expect at your appointment.
First, when you arrive please park in a designated Internal Medicine parking spot and call the clinic. A friendly member of the IM team will then come out with paperwork for you to fill out. Once that is completed, a detailed history will be taken by either a veterinary technician or doctor. If you are here for an ultrasound, please expect to be at the clinic for 45 minutes or more for results. At that time we will be prepared to discuss what the next steps will be. Please expect to be here for your appointment for at least an hour. If your pet needs a procedure that same day, they will be worked into our procedure schedule in the afternoon. We try to give the most accurate time frame that we can, but please know emergencies happen and times get delayed. Please be assured, we are a 24 hour facility and we do not close, so your pet will be monitored carefully the entire time.
If your Pet is on medications, please let us know what medications he/she is on prior to the day of the appointment. This way we can advise you on which medications should be given the morning of the appointment.
If you are coming for an ultrasound, please do not feed your pet the day of your appointment, as the food sitting in the stomach can actually prevent us from seeing things on the ultrasound. It is ok for your pet to drink water on the day of the ultrasound.
If you are diabetic, please feed half of a breakfast meal the morning of the appointment and give only half of the normal insulin dose. Please make sure you know the exact type of insulin and the quantity you normally give both in the mornings and the evenings. If you can bring a picture of both the insulin bottle and the syringe you use to administer it that is helpful.
If you are coming for oral chemotherapy, your pet can have a normal breakfast meal prior to the appointment and if you are comfortable to give Cerenia at home, please let the staff know that you did give it. Otherwise, they will receive it in hospital.
If you are coming in for injectable chemotherapy, then a normal breakfast meal is fine and what ever medications are dispensed should be given as directed.
